Course Description:  This course is designed to prepare experienced law enforcement personnel to effectively train, mentor, evaluate, and develop newly hired or newly assigned officers during the field training process. Field Training Officers play a critical role in helping trainees transition from the classroom environment to the practical application of agency policies, professional standards, and law enforcement responsibilities.

Throughout this online course, participants will examine the duties and responsibilities of a Field Training Officer, including professional role modeling, effective communication, coaching, adult learning principles, performance evaluation, and constructive feedback. Participants will also explore the organization and administration of a field training program, appropriate use of training and evaluation documents, identification of performance deficiencies, development of remedial training strategies, and procedures for recommending advancement, extension, or termination from the program.

The course emphasizes objective observation, accurate documentation, ethical decision-making, consistency in trainee evaluations, and the legal and organizational liabilities associated with field training. Participants will learn strategies for creating a structured and supportive learning environment while maintaining accountability and protecting the integrity of the agency’s training process.

Upon successful completion, participants will be better prepared to eplain the purpose and structure of a field training program, perform the duties and responsibilities of an effective Field Training Officer, apply appropriate coaching, mentoring, and instructional techniques, observe, document, and objectively evaluate trainee performance, identify performance deficiencies and implement remedial training, recognize potential legal, ethical, and supervisory liabilities, and make informed recommendations regarding a trainee’s progress and continued employment.
