Course Description: The TCOLE New Supervisor’s Course is designed for Individuals assigned to their first supervisory role. Per HB 3211, “….a peace officer who is appointed or will be appointed to the officer’s first supervisory position must receive in-service training on supervision…no earlier than the 12th month before the date of that appointment or later than the first anniversary of the date of that appointment.”
This mandatory course, as prescribed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) (#3737), is designed to equip newly appointed law enforcement supervisors with the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for effective leadership in a contemporary policing environment. This comprehensive program addresses the critical transition from peer to supervisor, focusing on the legal, ethical, and practical aspects of leading personnel and managing operational responsibilities.
The topics that will be covered in the course are: Relevant Commission Rules and Legislative Changes; Role Identification; Vaules, Ethics and Principles; Communication; Leadership Styles; Counseling; Liability and Civil Rights Issues; Planning and Organizing; Civil Rights, Racial Sensitivity, and Cultural Diversity; Special Investigative Issues and The Transition.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive credit hours towards their TCOLE continuing education requirements.
Target Audience: This course is mandatory for all newly appointed law enforcement supervisors in the state of Texas, as required by TCOLE. This course is also beneficial for Jail and Telecommunication supervisors.
