COURSE DESCRIPTION: Emergency Detention Order (#8882) is a five-hour continuing-education course designed to prepare Texas peace officers to make lawful, informed, and defensible decisions when responding to individuals experiencing a mental-health crisis.
Participants will examine the legal authority governing emergency detention under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 573, including warrantless apprehension, magistrate-issued warrants, the Peace Officer’s Notification of Emergency Detention, and the officer’s responsibilities during transport and facility handoff. The course also addresses crisis assessment, suicide and violence-risk indicators, medical considerations, de-escalation techniques, voluntary treatment options, criminal diversion, and fact-based documentation.
Through guided discussion and practical exercises, participants will learn how to distinguish a mental-health crisis from criminal conduct, identify when the statutory criteria for emergency detention are met, select the most appropriate disposition, and clearly articulate the facts supporting their decision.
This course is ideal for patrol officers, deputies, constables, school-based officers, supervisors, mental-health officers, and other law-enforcement personnel who may respond to behavioral-health emergencies.
